MORE DATA BREACHES TO DATE IN 2008 THAN FOR ALL OF 2007

On August 26, 2008, the Washington Post revealed that according to a report by Identity Theft Resource Center of San Diego, more data breaches have been reported this year than in all of 2007. The report sites over 22 million data breaches with consumer records so far this year. The real number of affected records is more than likely higher since a single data breach belongs to multiple companies, 41% of the cases were not disclosed and many times businesses are not reporting or are not aware of data breaches.

Federal prosecutors recently indicted 11 people alleged to have taken part in stealing more than 40 million credit- and debit-card account numbers from nine nationwide retailers.

Secure data storage and information destruction is an apparent resolution to this on going problem.
