UNIVERSITY OF KANSAS REVISES DESTRUCTION POLICY

The University Daily Kansan reported on Wednesday, August 27, 2008 that after the investigation of the improper disposal of sensitive student information in September 2007, the University of Kansas announced a revised privacy policy and a new e-data disposal policy.

Administration at the University of Kansas admitted to having a policy for disposal but that it was never in writing. Over the last year, the university has adopted comprehensive secure disposal policies. Many departments have opted to utilize a vendor approved secure destruction contractor for the disposal of sensitive documents. The number of departments using the service was reported to have doubled from 26 to 52 over the past year.

The fact that universities are taking responsibility for secure document destruction by adopting written policies and contracting with secure destruction vendors to properly dispose of sensitive documents once again confirms the upward mobility of our industry.
