IDENTITY THEFT IS NOW STREET GANG TERRITORY

According to a Los Angeles Times article on August 12, 2008, identity theft is rising in California and street gangs are getting a piece of the action. A study on the trend of identity fraud by Identity Theft 911, a consulting firm based in Scottsdale, Arizona, highlights that street gangs role in identity theft in California contributed to a 31% increase in identity theft complaints to local authorities last year.

Identity thieves once viewed as computer hackers are now viewed as members of traditional street gangs. Gangs are now focusing on theft of identifying information on all levels. Gang members are putting state, federal and corporate employees on their “payroll” as insiders in order to obtain Social Security numbers, credit card information and bank account information.

Secure data storage and regulated information destruction is considered to be the resolution to this identity theft trend.
